Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical engineering is a branch of engineering that deals with application of various engineering principles with an aim to design and construct machines along with their parts. Mechanical engineers gain in depth knowledge about materials, mechanics – solid and fluid, thermodynamics, heat transfer, control systems, instrumentation (including bioinstrumentation), design, and manufacturing to understand mechanical systems.

Work domain of a mechanical engineer ranges from a huge variety of industries that include conceptualization, designing and also creation of machines with all their components. Inspite being one of the oldest branch of engineering, it continues to be amongst the most opted fields due to its advancements.

Having said that, Mechanical engineering also has a few concentrations that one can take which are as follows:
1. Environment/Sustainability
2. Dynamics
3. Energy Systems
4. Manufacturing
5. Material Science
6. Mechanical Design

1. Environment
Environment is one of the major specialization under mechanical engineering. It deals with effects of the design on the environment along with the effect of the environment on their designs.

2. Dynamics
Mechanical engineering majorly deals with moving or changing a physical system along with its testing and optimization at various levels. Optimization consists of theories based on dynamics that are being experimented with the help of computational and other iterative methods.

3. Energy Systems
As the work of a mechanical engineer includes different aspects, typically a mechanical engineer also considers factors related to energy that is used. It mainly includes factors related to the way this energy is stored and used and also the way by which it is controlled. It also consists the study of energy coming from different sources like natural gas, oil, wind, and water. It trains a student on how this energy must be stored and used.

4. Manufacturing
Manufacturing is one of the most interesting and evolving domains under mechanical
engineering. It generally includes automated manufacturing, quality control, precision
manufacturing, and optimization of processes.

5. Material Science
This specialized program trains one to choose materials based on the performance in the given application by considering various aspects.

6. Mechanical Design
Mechanical Design is one of the most creative domains under mechanical engineering. It is the study of how an idea can be conceptualized with the help of detailed designs.
Various stages include collection of requirements based on which an idea is developed.
It also considers aspects of quality assurance and life cycle of the product.

Other commonly observed Master’s programs for students with an Industrial engineering background are Aerospace engineering, Industrial engineering, Supply Chain or Operations Research, etc.
